China's TEDA Transforms from Investment Magnet to Competitive Industrial Hub via Industrial-chain Upgrade

Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA)

TIANJIN, China, Sept. 15, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) reported that strategic emerging industries accounted for 40.4 % of its total industrial added value in the first half of this year.

As one of China's first-batch national-level economic-technological development zones, TEDA has evolved from a saline-alkali wasteland back in 1984 into a dynamic industrial hub brimming with foreign-funded enterprises and burgeoning new-quality productive forces.

A profound transformation focused on consolidating industrial-chain foundations, strengthening existing chains and fostering emerging sectors is well underway here.

Traditional pillar industries are moving toward high-value-added segments. Tianjin Wanghai Technology Development Co., Ltd. has built complete production lines capable of producing high-purity xenon with 99.999 % purity. Its newly constructed technical-renovation project for helium-gas purification and liquefaction fills the gap in large-scale liquid-helium mass production across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The perfluoropolyether fluid independently developed by Tianjin Changlu Fluorochemical Material Co., Ltd. serves as a core medium for immersion liquid cooling in AI computing-power hardware. In July this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the shortlist of participants for its "unveiling-the-list" innovation initiative for key fine-chemical products, with Changlu Fluorochemicals selected for the perfluoroether lubricant category. The green petrochemical industry in Nangang Industrial Zone continues to improve in quality, with its industrial-cluster output exceeding 100 billion yuan.

Deployment of emerging and future-oriented industries is gathering momentum. Tianjin EMAGING Technology Co., Ltd., in joint research with universities, has achieved phased breakthroughs in key technologies for high-speed, high-load magnetic-levitation bearings. Core technical indicators of its prototype have reached internationally-leading standards. More than 40 supporting enterprises operate within the biomedicine industrial base, with projects from Asymchem and Pharma leading niche market segments.

TEDA has been designated as one of Tianjin's first pilot zones for future industries, ramping up efforts in cutting-edge fields including embodied intelligence, brain-computer interfaces and quantum technology.

Foreign-invested enterprises are expanding their local footprint. Otis has rolled out innovative products such as smart elevators leveraging its Northern China R&D Centre. Its orders for elevator retrofits in old residential communities rose by 50 % year-on-year in the first half of the year.

Thirty-eight foreign-funded R&D centres have settled in the zone. Multinational giants including Novo Nordisk, SEW-Eurodrive and Samsung Electro-Mechanics keep increasing investment and expanding production capacity. Through institutional innovation and targeted services, TEDA lays a solid track for foreign-funded enterprises, supporting their growth from initial investment to deep-rooted local integration.
